How degrading to think that we have reduced a word to an abbreviation because…well, because why? We feel that the word “nigger” is too hurtful to Blacks living in this country? We feel that Blacks, unlike any other minority group that has well chosen racial epithets attached to it, are unable to handle the actual use of the word? Will we next change “spics” to “the S word,” and kikes to “the K word?” Are we saying that Puerto Ricans and Jews are better equipped to handle the actual full spelling of racist terms…somehow Blacks are not? Without going into the psychology of such thinking couldn’t one, without too much thought, label it racist in nature? Dr. Laura is an idiot…however, once again Jon Stewart sets the standard by actually uttering the word “nigger” during this story…something you won’t see on any other “news” program. By the way…any subscribers of this blog who happen to be Black, please let us know if your seeing the word “nigger” in print has ruined your day. We won’t amend the post, but it would be interesting to hear why.

As a 1/2 Kike, 1/4 Kraut, 1/4 Frog contributor and reader I’d like to say shame on you for not realizing that we need to use only the first initial of every potentially uncomfortable word. For example. “Tell that K-word kid that nobody will steal his D-word lunch while he’s on the T-word J-wording off”

See how much kinder and more polite that sounds?

I’d like to disagree. I’m with Jon Stewart on this one; context is everything.

Meanwhile, I would be quite surprised if we never see the term “N Word” here, especially since it is in the title.

Sometimes it is necessary to use the word “nigger”, and it is not always used in a demeaning way.

Is it not better, for example, to explain that Dr. Laura got in trouble for saying “nigger” than to say she got in trouble for saying “the N Word?”

    JD,

I would like to disagree with you! Don’t you find it rather demeaning when a particular group is singled out for “special handling?” Are we saying that a Black person is harmed to a greater extent by seeing the word “nigger” than they are by seeing the insidious “N Word?” As the original post…are all other minorities somehow better able to cope with the fully spelled out for of epithet? Context has nothing to do with it…it’s absurd to somehow feel that and abbreviated statement of racism is somehow “better.”

I can see a point in your reply, Admin, and I’m sure eveyone knows what “N Word” means.

Not being black, I cannot tell you if “N Word” as opposed to “nigger” is accepted by those who are black as an effort to be less offensive or not.

I suppose we ought not use either term.

It is interesting to note that, to the best of my recollection, Archie Bunker never said “nigger”. He did use the other words listed above, along with some not listed.

I cannot stand in the shoes of a man of another race, and I cannot imagine what it is like to be arrested based on your skin color, but I know it happens.

We do live in a world of politically correct language. “Did you have a bowell movement” means the same as “Did you take a crap”, but it sounds nicer.

I’m not sure anyone is “harmed” by the use of a word. Some words are more inflamitory than others, and if the point is to have a dicussion, words known to inflame are a poor choice. If the discussion is about why those words are so inflamitory, then there is no point in using a euphemism for the word.

Kind of like Lenny Bruce, who had, I believe, a valid point in having to know what seven words he could not say.
